The Bridgewater and Taunton Canal was to be part of a ship canal from Bristol to Exeter, but this never happened. The current canal, after restoration by Somerset County Council and British Waterways, was re-opened to navigation in 1994. Bridgwater Docks are now a marina, surrounded by new shops and housing.
